THE CANAL NETWORK

The 18th century canal network at the heart of Britain, built by James Brindley and others is one of the great achievements of the Industrial Revolution, and the Midlands was the hub of this new transport infrastructure. Birmingham city centre is where some of the longest and busiest canals meet and includes many wharfs where boats would load and unload goods and materials.

DID YOU KNOW...
James Brindley, king of canal building, died just days after completion of his last project. His first, The Newhall Branch, no longer exists. It was drained and built over in the late 1930s. Cambrian Wharf is where this branch connected with the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal. The canal network is now protected, but is becoming evermore flanked by new developments.
